The date for the next Native American flute workshop (number 8) at the Sunburst Sanctuary is Saturday, February 9th. If you are planning on coming and haven’t yet notified me, please let me know (alfredking@earthlink.net).
If you are a beginning flute player or have no experience and want to get started we will be having a 1.5 hour starting session at 10:30 in the morning to cover the rudiments of flute playing. This morning session is appropriate for the first time player as well as someone who wants to brush up on the basics. The afternoon session starts at 1:00 and runs to 4:00. This is the eighth in a series of workshops, but beginners should be able to follow most of what is being covered.
The suggested donation for the afternoon session is $25 and the morning session is just an additional $5 for a total of $30. We are using six hole Native American style flutes. The ideal flute for the class is a mid range flute with a root pitch of A. I have flutes available for $55.
Email me if you have either questions or suggestions about what will be covered.
Once you let me know you are planning on attending, I will send directions to the sanctuary and give you the details on what to bring. |

The next flute workshop at the Sunburst Sanctuary is March 10, 2012. There will be a beginners session that starts at 10:30. We will cover the basics of playing the native American style flute: breathing into the flute, covering the holes, and the basic scale. We might get into some ornamentation if we have time. We will break from 12:00 to 1:00. Folks are welcome to bring a lunch. We typically spend the lunch hour eating and getting more acquainted with each other. At 1:00 the main part of the workshop will begin. This is the fourth in a series of workshops.
My focus in the workshops is to encourage the ability to improvise on the flute by developing playing skills and techniques. We will work with rhythm, ornaments or embellishments, scales and modes, chords, playing with other musicians, learning songs and what ever else comes up. We use exercises to help develop these new skills.
We are using the 6 hole style of flute as it has much more versatility than the 5 hole. The ideal key is A on a flute that easily plays the A minor pentatonic scale. I have flutes made by Butch Hall that are excellent for beginning players available for $55. They are in tune and have 15 notes available.
The workshops are held in the main lodge at the Sunburst Sanctuary which is a 4,000 acre property along highway one between Lompoc and Las Cruces. Sunburst is a spiritual retreat center where spiritual growth through the use of Kriya yoga is encouraged. Please be aware that the use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco are not permitted at the sanctuary. Please don't bring pets with you.
The suggested donation for the afternoon workshop is $25 or $30 for both sessions. I can take cash or checks on Saturday. If you need to use a credit card you should take care of that with the sanctuary staff prior to the workshop. You can contact the Sanctuary through the website: SunburstOnline.org or by calling 805-736-6528.
I'll send directions if/when you let me know you are planning on attending. The sanctuary is about an hour and a quarter south of San Luis Obispo. alfred king <alfredking@earthlink.net>
