Spanish Cedar Xiao Short

Spanish Cedar Xiao Short:  "I purchased a wonderful G Xiao (Chinese classical flute) from flute maker Vance Penington at the Yosemite Flute Festival in 2009. I told him I would make a recording with it and send it to him. After more than a year I got comfortable enough with the flute to attempt the recording in January of 2011. For background I started out with the keyboard and acoustic guitar. Then I recorded the xiao. To finish it off I added prerecorded loops from Garage band of shakers and a ceramic drum. It is quite short as all I needed was enough for a demo for Vance’s website. The G Xiao is made of spanish cedar with holly accents, hence the name Spanish Cedar Xiao (short version). I always intended to get back to the song and finish the recording: make it longer and perhaps replace the percussion loops with instruments that I am playing. Someday."  -- Al King

Cool Creek is a collaboration between Al King on flutes and Kevin McConnell on piano. It was recorded during October of 2011 as the first project in Kevin’s new studio. The creek and birds were recorded the spring of 2011 at the Sunburst Sanctuary. This piece began as an improvisation with Kevin on the piano and Al on the Pat Haran bass G flute. The basic piece was recorded on the first time through. After having a listen, the Pat Haran bass C flute was added. The mid-range Butch Hall concert G flute was added in the third pass. Kevin worked the recording and Al returned the next weekend to finish up the flute work.

The sea cave at Coon Creek on PGE land near Montana de Oro is a great place to visit at low tide.  Al took his flutes there and came up with this improvisation in E dorian.
